What’s Love Got to Do With It?
Posted on 11. Jan, 2010 by Lisa Clayton in Articles

As the New Year unfolds, there is a buzz about the new decade and what it will bring…new models of leadership, global economy shifts and the awakening of the human spirit on many levels. In the business arena, how often do we use “love” as one of the determining factors when we make life-changing decisions? What does love have to do with the intentions we release and the new ones we invite? Do we truly love our work and our working environment? Will love finally come to the forefront for the way we do business in the new decade? What’s love got to do with it?
One story of love was shared by my next door neighbors, Lu and Patty. As the new year approached, both were struggling to define their relationship in times of financial hardship. The odds seemed to overwhelm the possibility of surviving independently. The questions kept nagging, “Are we combining resources for the right reasons, are we forcing our commitment to each other based on our finances, what’s love got to do with it?”
Each New Year’s Eve, Lu’s family maintains a ritual which reinforces the power of love. Family members are dressed up in white in honor of Lu’s son who passed away at a tender age of 14. The ritual takes place at the beach where multicolored flowers will be tossed. Each colored flower symbolizes one aspect of humanity; yellow for prosperity, red for love and white for spirituality. Each person honors their past while inviting new blessings for the coming new year with each tossing of a flower into the ocean.
While Lu prepared for this year’s ritual, Patty proclaimed her independence much to his surprise. She wanted to avoid the hazards of downsizing and combining resources. She did, however, agree to accompany Lu to the beach on New Year’s Eve. One by one Patty thoughtfully and intently tossed each flower into the ocean. With the last flower, she turned and saw Lu, on his knees, offering a beautiful ring of proposal. As Patty described the scene, all she saw was “pure love” radiating from Lu. She felt the flow of true love beating from her heart and instantly knew her answer. What’s love got to do with it? Everything–it can move mountains! Shortly after, the human power of love triumphed. The financial worries dissipated and a new chapter in their lives began.
Similar struggles and challenges are not uncommon with organizations and businesses around the world. How can focusing on love, a “human” aspect, help in trying times? When you love what you do, it makes a world of difference.
